On Monday, 28 March 2016 we visited the renovated war memorial in Spier, located on the A28. It was always a cross with text, pressed tightly against the guardrail, because the exact location was between the lanes of the highway. Now it's a beautiful monument, except the cross there is also an information panel and a bench.

The monument was erected in memory of 14 men who were murdered by the Germans on suspicion of armed resistance. on Lange Maatseweg Spier at 10 April 1945. Probably because Westerbork was too far to walk and the Allies were on the heels of the Germans. The next day the village was liberated. The celebration was muted by the executions a day earlier.
The monument now has a plaque with the names of the victims and there is a sign posted where the story briefly explains.
