78 years ago today: the attack on Pearl Harbor

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack by the Japanese Imperial Navy led by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto at the American Naval Base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Sunday morning 7 December 1941. The attack was intended to destroy most of the United States fleet so that Japan would have free play in the Pacific.

As a result, 2,402 Americans lost their lives and 1,282 were injured. The losses on the Japanese side were much smaller, 65 soldiers were killed or injured. A Japanese sailor was captured.
