The legendary Dame Vera Lynn (103) passed away

18 juni 2020. Today the sad news arrives that our very beloved and beloved singer and "Sweetheart of the Forces" Vera Lynn has passed away. She has reached a great age: 103 years! She was always cheerful and no doubt that contributed to her reaching this high age.
Vera Lynn was born as Vera Margaret Welch in East Ham, London. She used her grandmother's maiden name as a stage name. She started performing at the age of seven and first appeared on the radio in 1935, with the then famous Joe Loss orchestra. In 1940 Lynn got her own radio programme, Sincerely Yours, in which she passed messages to soldiers abroad and sang request numbers.

Vera Lynn sings for the British troops during the Second World War. She offered the soldiers comfort and a connection with home.

She also visited hospitals to interview young mothers and pass on their messages to their husbands overseas, and performed for British soldiers, for example in what was then Burma. In 1942 she recorded the nostalgic We'll Meet Again, which turned out to strike a chord with the many who were separated from their loved ones during the war. We'll Meet Again and her The White Cliffs of Dover are among the most famous songs of those years.
After the liberation, Lynn became the first British artist to reach the top of the American charts, with the song Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart.
In 1975 Vera Lynn was elevated to nobility. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she founded a charitable organization.
For years Lynn was regularly seen at commemorations of the Second World War; she almost became the unofficial spokesperson for the British veterans. In 1985 she performed in the Netherlands at the official concert on the occasion of 40 years of liberation. In 1992 she performed on the platform of the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek. In 1995 she performed at Buckingham Palace on the occasion of the fiftieth Victory in Europe Day. Ten years later she was still a guest at a similar party in Trafalgar Square, but she did not sing anymore. She did give a speech in which she praised the veterans of the Second World War and called on younger generations to remember their sacrifice.

In 2009 maakte Lynn haar comeback in de Britse hitlijsten. Met haar verzamelalbum We'll Meet Again - The Very Best of Vera Lynn haalde zij de album Top 20. Lynn was daarmee de oudste nog in leven zijnde zangeres die de Britse hitparade bereikte. In juli 2016 werd zij op 99-jarige leeftijd benoemd tot lid van de Orde van de Broeders van de Eer.

Three days before her centenary, the collective album Vera Lynn 100 was released, consisting of both classics and previously unreleased songs. Her centenary was celebrated with a concert in the London Palladium.
ARS Website has a lot of love and deep respect for this talented singer, who gave so much comfort to the Allied soldiers on the fronts and on the home front, especially in the dark years of the Second World War through her singing. Vera Lynn will be remembered forever by us and we will listen often to her beautiful voice. Also on this sad day we think back with gratitude to what she meant to England in the darkest hours.
