Waalcrossing
On September 8th, 2007 I took part of the Battlefield Tour Market Garden, arranged by the Friends of the Airborme Museum with the excellent guides Wybo Boersma and Jack Haegens. On this one-day-tour we followed the route from the bridge over the river Meuse at Grave to the bridge over the river Waal at Nijmegen. In that area we stood on the roof of the Nuon building with a marvellous view on the river Waal at the point where the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division crossed the river on 20 September 1944 under heavy German fire. They had to attack the Nijmegen bridge from the other side. They used simple assault boats. This view was for the last time since there are plans to change that area radically next year.
