On Thursday 20 February 2020 Stanley Butterworth passed away at the age of 95 in his hometown Winnipeg in Canada. Butterworth was known in Groningen and surroundings as 'The Liberator of Groningen'.

I took this picture of Stanley Butterworth in Delfzijl in 2015. He showed me his medals.

Stanley was Fred Butterworth's younger brother. Stanley Butterworth and his older brother Fred grew up in Canadian Winnipeg. They were inseparable, together they attended ice hockey matches and ran a newspaper district. During the Second World War, the lives of both brothers were still parallel: both decided to join the army voluntarily and served with the Canadian tank regiment The Fort Garry Horse. An armoured reconnaissance unit of the Canadian army. After intensive military training in 1943 they reached the European mainland in September 1944. Together they pulled up in their tanks to liberate Europe. Eventually they arrived at the city of Groningen. On April 13, 1945 Fred Butterworth took the lead in his tank while Stanley was still waiting in reserve.

Fred Butterworth was temporarily buried opposite the spot where his tank was hit.

There is now a plaque on the facade of the building against which the tank drove. Stanley Butterworth came to Groningen to commemorate his brother and to place wreaths on the spot where Fred died.
